Health and Wellbeing
Children develop physical wellbeing, mental health and positive relationships through active play, movement and healthy habits.
At Greenbank we believe that the learning environment is the main teacher. We set up many creative and interactive spaces that appeal to the interests of individual children and support their learning and development.
The play activities we provide are aimed at the following areas of children’s development and learning identified in the early level of the Curriculum for Excellence.
Children develop physical wellbeing, mental health and positive relationships through active play, movement and healthy habits.
Early reading, writing and communication skills grow through stories, songs, conversation and everyday play.
Children explore numbers, shapes, patterns and measurement through hands-on activities and problem-solving play.
Children investigate the world around them through observation and curiosity — from growing plants to exploring materials and nature.
Children learn about themselves, their community and the wider world through role play, discussion and real-world exploration.
Children express themselves through art, music, drama and dance — accessing painting, craft, percussion and movement every day.
Creative thinking and problem-solving skills develop through construction materials, design activities and age-appropriate digital resources.
Children are supported to develop values of kindness, fairness and respect — exploring questions about the world and how we care for one another.
The Curriculum for Excellence’s underpinning values are wisdom, justice, compassion and integrity with the child at the centre of learning.
The curriculum is inclusive and a stimulus for personal achievement. By providing enjoyment, depth and challenge through activities children experience a broadening of their world and encouragement towards informed and responsible citizenship.
The experiences and outcomes in the range of curriculum areas build in relevant attributes and capabilities which support the development of the four capacities.
The purpose of the curriculum is to enable the child to develop in four capacities becoming:
We also use ‘Realising the Ambition’. This early years guidance highlights the importance of experiences, interactions and spaces. It focusses on the importance of play with an emphasis on wellbeing, movement and promoting confidence, creativity and curiosity.
For further information about the curriculum please feel free to speak to a key worker, see our own curriculum policies or visit Education Scotland’s site for more information.
Our Staff will be glad to talk to you about what your child is learning in the centre, both informally and formally. We recognise the value of working with you to contribute to all that you are already doing to give your child the best possible start in life.
